The Quiet Ways Anxiety Can Hold You Back
The Quiet Ways Anxiety Can Hold You Back
By Caroline Green, LMHC
When we think about anxiety, we often picture racing thoughts, constant worry, or feeling overwhelmed.
But anxiety doesn't always show up so loudly.
Sometimes, it quietly changes the choices we make. We put off making the phone call. We skip dinner with friends because we're tired. We tell ourselves we'll try something new when the timing feels better.
At first, these choices may seem small - or even reasonable. But over time, they can slowly shape the life we're living.
Anxiety rarely tells us, "Don't live your life."
Instead, it whispers, "Maybe not today."
Anxiety Often Feels Protective
Anxiety's job is to keep us safe. When something feels uncertain or uncomfortable, avoiding it can bring immediate relief.
The challenge is that this relief doesn't last. Over time, our brains can start learning that avoiding discomfort is the safest choice - even when the situation isn't actually dangerous.
Without realizing it, anxiety can begin influencing our decisions.
How Anxiety Can Show Up in Everyday Life
Anxiety doesn't always stop us from doing big things. More often, it quietly affects our everyday choices.
You might notice yourself:
Saying "maybe next time" more often than "yes."
Waiting until you feel completely ready before taking the next step.
Avoiding difficult conversations.
Putting goals, hobbies, or opportunities on hold.
Sticking with what's familiar, even when you want something different.
You may not notice it right away. One skipped invitation becomes two. One postponed task turns into weeks of putting it off.
Over time, you may feel stuck - not because you don't want more for yourself, but because anxiety has been guiding your choices.
A Small Step to Try
The good news is that change doesn't require a huge leap.
This week, notice one thing anxiety has been encouraging you to put off.
Maybe it's a phone call, a conversation, an invitation, or something you've been wanting to try.
Ask yourself:
"Am I choosing not to do this because it doesn't align with what I want, or because anxiety is asking me to stay comfortable?"
You don't have to force yourself into a huge step. Simply noticing the pattern is the first step toward changing it.
If you've noticed anxiety quietly holding you back, you're not alone.
