Why Adult Friendships Feel Different
Why Adult Friendships Feel Different
By Caroline Green, LMHC
Friendships used to feel easier.
In school, connection was often built into everyday life. You saw the same people regularly, made plans without comparing three calendars, and didn't have to work quite so hard to stay connected.
Then adulthood happens.
Careers, relationships, moves, family responsibilities, and changing priorities can make friendships harder to maintain. Sometimes, it leaves us wondering: Is it supposed to feel this way?
Friendships Change as Life Changes
As we move through adulthood, our lives don't always change at the same pace.
Someone moves away. Schedules get busier. Priorities shift. The person you once talked to every day may become someone you catch up with once a month.
That doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with the friendship. Sometimes, relationships simply have to adjust to the season of life we're in.
Friendship Takes Intention
One of the biggest differences with adult friendship is that connection isn't always built into our lives anymore.
Staying close may mean reaching out first, making plans in advance, or finding new ways to connect when life gets busy.
The same is true for building new friendships. Without school or college bringing us together regularly, connection often grows through showing up consistently and giving new relationships time to develop.
And closeness doesn't have to look a certain way. You may not talk every day or see each other every weekend for a friendship to still be meaningful.
Check In With Your Connections
Take a moment to think about the friendships in your life right now.
Which friendships feel meaningful, and where might you want a little more connection?
Maybe there's a friendship you'd like to nurture, someone you've lost touch with, or space in your life for someone new.
What would moving toward that connection look like for you?
If friendships have felt harder to build or maintain lately, you're not alone.
